Group Pushes for Immigrant Rights in New Jersey; Protests Essex County Detention Facility

Advocates concluded a six-week campaign for immigrant rights in New Jersey by marching through Newark, ABC7 News reported.

Our New Jersey immigration attorneys understand the challenges faced by immigrant families and we are dedicated to fighting for their rights. We not only help with applications and petitions, we accompany clients to all interviews in Newark or Mount Laurel.

Friday's event was the end of the statewide campaign called "Lament, Compassion, Solidarity & Conversion." It aimed to focus on "recognizing the human value of immigrants." The group is pushing for immigration reform that focuses on keeping families intact. It began on Ash Wednesday with a 10-mile march from Liberty State Park to the Elizabeth Detention Center. About 60 people participated in Friday's march, which started at the Hall of Records in Newark.

The group also objects to a new immigrant detention facility in Essex County and contends that the federal immigration system is inhumane and disruptive to families. Essex County officials have proposed expanding the existing Essex County Correctional Facility to accommodate additional immigrant detainees. The facility already houses some immigrant detainees at a per-bed rate of $105, according to Immigration and Custom Enforcement.

However, an Essex County spokesman said those plans are not finalized. If the plan does come to fruition, I certainly hope that there will be standards in place for more humane treatment of immigrant detainees. Having personally visited many foreign inmates at the Elizabeth Detention Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey, I have witnessed firsthand the substandard conditions that they are forced to endure. One thing people ought to remember is that a large portion of foreign inmate detainees have not violated any of our criminal laws. There is no justification to treat them like convicted felons, who in some cases, enjoy more rights and protections than "illegal aliens."
