Last week, NJ Senator Frank Lautenberg sent a letter to the director of ICE regarding claims of improper influence during the bidding process for a new detention facility in Essex County. Apparently, according to the <a href=”http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/29/nyregion/essex-county-nj-gets-one-bid-for-detention-center-contract.html” target=”_blank>New York Times article, the likely site of the facility will be in Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey. Time will tell what will happen, but all the controversy does serve to illuminate the current state of detention facilities for immigration inmates. Currently, inmates are held either at the Elizabeth Detention Facility or at correctional facilities in Essex, Hudson, Bergen, and Monmouth counties. We will of course keep our readers posted….
