One of the most common questions that people have is how to check the status of a case with USCIS. There are primarily basic ways, which we are shown below:

It is important to understand that what you see online or even what a USCIS customer service representative tells you may not necessarily be the most up-to-date, current status of your case.

More importantly, having the information is one thing: knowing or realizing that something is taking longer than usual is an entirely different matter. A case status may indicate that your case is still processing--which you probably already knew--but it won't necessarily alert you that the case is beyond normal processing times.

On the other hand, sometimes a check will tell you something that you may not have been aware of. In many cases, people have discovered that the case was already approved or worse, denied many months ago.

It is important to understand that the above is only general information and not legal advice. It does not create an attorney-client relationship nor should it be relied upon as legal advice. The law is extremely fact and circumstance sensitive.
